reassurance re Mint 10

Postby WVPARN on Wed May 02, 2012 4:09 pm

Hi. I just found that my Aspire One 722 (AO722) was having wireless problems with Ubuntu 11 and 12. I found that with Mint 10, the wireless works without tweaking or problems.

I think that the suspend or hibernate is flawed, but one of them seems to work, I don't recall which one.

Anyway, will I have to anticipate problems using Mint 10 for the next year or two? If I use the next versions of Mint, won't I run into the same wireless problems everyone else has on the Acer with Ubuntu? I don't want to spend hours tweaking my computer, if there's no benefit to the upgrade. So if I don't upgrade, what problems can I expect?

Thanks for any info...

Why not try a "live CD or DVD" of LinuxMint 12" (DVD preferred). If your Wi-fi works with that then you can install version 12. Version 10 is a bit old considering that version 13 is about to be released.
If you are having problems with Ubuntu, why would you expect those same problems with LinuxMint? They are not the same.

Thanks for the tip. I tried using Unetbootin to put the linux mint 12 gnome dvd 32 bit onto a USB, but the computer says that the operating system is missing when I try to boot to that. Maybe there's another ISO I can try that with... Any thoughts about why Unetbootin didn't do it for me? There's no DVD on the Acer netbooks.

I used Unetbootin on my Ubuntu 12 Asus computer, and was able to make a Live USB for Mint 12.

I ran the Mint 12 USB on my Acer AO722, and found the exact same problem that we've been talking about on ubuntu forums. There is some conflict involving the wireless card or the drivers. The computer hangs after about three or four seconds from the time the wireless starts to connect to a network. It can recognize the network, but it can't connect. Mint is built upon Ubuntu to some extent, so some problems may be inherited. This is why I'd like to stay with 10 on this computer.

Here is an example of this problem.

Bearing in mind that there appears to be a block in the path for Acer Aspire computers, can I stay with 10 indefinitely on this computer? Or will things start to get insecure and broken?

Are you certain the issue cannot be resolved? The link provided showed a thread where the OP's issue was solved and chili555 is by far the best wireless troubleshooter out there. If you can't fix it, post a problem to Ubuntu's forum and if he is available he'll get you right on target. I've yet to see someone else demonstrate the depth of knowledge he has demonstrated and he helped me a couple years ago with one of my own. He used to visit here as well, but not sure if he still does.

I bought and "rebuilt" an Acer Aspire AO722-0825 with LMDE 201204 this passed weekend for my wife. Everything including the dimmer Fn, Trackpad Fn seem to work without problems. The wireless came up and has worked flawlessly for three days (now) and on three different wireless networks. The only issues I encountered with the LMDE 201204 build were with an error in the graphics display when loading the live 64bit LMDE software (before performing my build). It was fixed easily by using the F5 key and numerous other 'tricks' to refresh the screen. From that point on things were as 'slick as goose grease'.

This is a wonderful, little (footprint-wise) PC, now with a reliable, open, reliable, and 'fast' OS.

The unit was on sale this weekend for $299 at Staples. I know it was priced less earlier, but I missed that sale. Oh well.... I still recommend the unit if you want a light weight, good capacity, little laptop even the keyboard is 'ok'... just not great.

Probably wifi becomes blocked (check this with rfkill list in terminal) and you need to blacklist acer-wmi (gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf). But if it has been fixed in LMDE then it'll probably also work in Mint 13.
