Problems running MATE

Postby Godlessly_Moral on Mon May 07, 2012 11:19 pm

I'm kinda surprised there isn't a forum just for Mate, but I am a new user with that, so here I am.

Somebody helped me find my way to the "fork" menu (I guess that's how the term may be applied) in MATE or Cinnamon to emulate the GNOME of better days, and so I've done that. I have installed the Lisa main edition from the dvd, so it turns out that most of the Mate-Cinnamon options were already installed.

Problem with MATE:
It's as sweet as the old GNOME, but for that it makes my fan scream like a banshee, even without my asking the system to do anything. When I do ask it to do so much as create shortcuts on my new GNOME panel, these don't show before the fan accelerates to a frightening pitch. Can't do anything efficiently with the GNU droppings, can't do anything at all with Mate. Others have made it clear that Mate works great for them, so maybe it's my hardware which isn't compatible - I have a five-year old Acer, and can provide the specs if anyone wants to take a stab at it (I sure would appreciate anyone trying to help with this).

For now I cannot use Mate, so I went and installed the original Cinnamon, to find out what it was good for. It looks like Mate, but is even more obnoxious than the default GNU droppings in that it not only fails to support desktop shortcuts and GNOME panels, and then it doesn't even offer the "Ubiquity" panel as a consolation prize! But at least it runs quiet on my computer. GNOME "Classic" (anyone remember that "Coca Cola Classic" marketing douchbaggery?) and that other fruity variety look equally bad. So am I stuck with running one of the crappy shells just to save my computer? I am really glad at least someone's trying to do something to help preserve the only shell which ever made Linux respectable, but if you have time to support more hardware for MATE, we Acer users need it.

Problem using any of these options: I have to logout after logging in every time my system reboots. Is there a way of making Mate or Cinnamon the default?

If there is nothing more that can be done to get Mate working on my computer, then I must consider downgrading to Mint 11 - will Mint continue to support this?

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Can you post the output of this these commands

Code: Select all
inxi -F

When you are logged in Mate and the fan accelerates

Code: Select all
inxi -t c

Are you using Compiz with Mate, there is a window manager conflict when using these 2 together and you have to kill marco, or renamed /usr/bin/marco to marco.1
