{SOLVED} How to stop Headphones and Speakers working at the

Postby Stalton on Wed May 09, 2012 12:32 am

I'm a newbie who is enjoying himself setting up my old laptop that had all but died running Windows.
My problem at the moment is that when I plug headphones in I am still getting sound from my laptop speakers as well. I guess it is better than no sound, but defeats the purpose of putting headphones on! All of the other devices I have used turn off the speakers when headphones are plugged in automatically.
I've had a dig round the Sound settings, but the Output section only says "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" but I can't see an option to specify the 3.5mm jack vs. speakers...

I've listed this post as a Newbie post because that sums me up very well! Feel free to direct me to the Hardware forum if that is more appropriate, but I'm still pretty GUI dependent (although very keen to get into the terminal commands if someone is patient enough to help me!).

I'm running Linux Mint 12 with Gnome 3 on a HP-Compaq-nx6120 Laptop, Pentium M 1.60 GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, 40GB HDD (partitioned) Intel (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

Thanks for your time

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Found the switch in Volume Control - as to why it is set to not recognise the headphones as default...well that's a mystery (Not to mention why there is a completely separate Volume setting program rather than it all being under the Sound section of system settings...)
Anyway , still loving Linux

Hi all, I have the complete opposite. My speakers work fine, but when I plug in my headphones, there is no sound at all going into them. What do I do? I opened alsa mixer in terminal to check the volume, but there isnt even a volume control for the headphones. There is a spot for one, but there is no control lever thing to adjust. Am running Mint 12 off my USB, but logging into windows, problem is still there too. :(

Hello, like the user above, I do not get any sound out of my headphone jack. I am using a Dell Studio 1747. I do get sound out of the speakers, and I get sound out of the HDMI port when I plug in an HDMI monitor.

I have noticed that the headphone is shown as not available when I open the Alsa volume control; and the headphone volume graphics are available. There must be a way to change the setting to show the headphone is available. I have tried setting the headphone in the sound settings as well without any luck.

Does anyone have an idea how to correct this issue?
