Package Manager and mintUpdate not working.

Postby ParadigmBlu3 on Fri Mar 07, 2008 12:33 am

I have had no problem for a while with the Package Manager and the mintUpdate. However, after messing with my wireless settings, I get an error with mintUpdate not being able to connect to the internet, and I also get an error message which says "W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/u ... 3_i386.deb
Could not connect to localhost:4001 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111 Connection refused)", when trying to install something from the package manager.

I can go on the internet like normal, these seem to be the only things that are no longer working.

Any ideas?

Do you have a proxy?
This is the cause I've found
You could also try to edit /etc/network/interfaces.
Comment out the two loopbacks - this will give you other problems but test apt-get with this
These two
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
This is because your computer is trying to download from itself....

Thanks Husse. I uninstalled the anon-proxy package that I had previously installed. I then commented out those two loopback lines. However, commenting out those two lines made it impossible for me to log on once I restarted. I switched to a terminal window and re-edited the lines back in.

It seems that all it took to fix the problem was to uninstall the proxy package and restart.

Thanks again for the help though.

Yes I know I should have warned you - I think you can live without auto lo but not iface lo inet loopback
Don't know for sure though

if you are behind a proxy you will have to setup
apt-get
synaptic
wget
to work with your proxy.
you will have to add something like
username:password@my.proxy.com/8080
into their config files.
I have not tested this yet.

Not in the latest gnomes... the proxy settings tool in gnome sets http_proxy and ftp_proxy environment variables, which are read by synaptic, apt, mintUpdate..etc. In Hardy/Elyssa even Firefox uses it.
