Changing Themes

Whenever I try to install a theme then it doesn't install it properly like the preview of the theme.

For instance I goto deviantart, then to the GTK+ catagory, download a theme, make it into a tar.gz (or somthing like that) then try to install it and it doesn't look right.

I don't have GTK+, and I don't know how to install it. I am a complete newbie with everything to do with linux

So if someone could help me with doing whatever I need to do, it would be much apreciated

Oh, and it also says this when I open Appearance

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

Use GNOME look instead. And yes, you have GTK installed. As for the error, I am not sure what causes this, but I think it is nothing to worry about, but somebody could maybe elaborate?

Okay, so how do I go about applying these themes from Gnome Look? Whenever I try with "appearance" then there is no theme packages. Unless I make them into tar.gz archives. But then they don't work properly.

Try customizing an existing theme and see if the choices ended up in there somewhere

Tried that, still doesn't look anything like the previews shown on the websites.

1. Download theme theme from GNOME look.
2. Install theme in Appearances, select the *.tar.gz file.
3. Some themes are just controls, others include metacity theme as well, use customize to see if there are any new controls. Some also installs as Custom, so you should always choose to use the theme right away.
The theme above is just an example, I have not tested it since I don't have GNOME available right now..
