multiple menu icons and bars

Postby linuxbman on Fri Jun 08, 2012 8:36 am

Hi all,

I'm new to Linux Mint, but have been using Ubuntu for the past 5(ish) years, so I am not new to linux.

I just did a fresh install of Mint 13 Cinnamon, and had a hell of a time getting my display working properly (I have a gts 8800 and dual monitors). I finally got it working smoothly, but now have 4 menu icons, 4 desktop icons, 4 menu bars. Basically anything that is at the bottom of the screen x4.

Can anyone give me a hint as to how to get this cleaned up?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I fixed this by removing a whole bunch of dot directories and one of them did the trick.

I removed:

.config
.cache
.gconf
.gnome2
.gnome2_private
.pulse

I doubt all of them need deleting, but one of those fixed it.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

I'm having the same problem except after doing the steps stated above, the menu bars come back as well as the icons. This all started when I issued the command "sudo kill X" to restart X, but obviously that wasn't the proper method. Now I'm having the problems stated above as well as my second monitor is completely white.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

ph1a5h, are you using a nvidia card? If so, the solution I gave here should do the trick.
I don't think killing X is what caused the problem. If you had need to restart X I'm guessing it's whatever happened just before the restart that caused the problem.

Looks like I figured out my issue as well. When this happened I was also in the process of setting up ATI drivers which is what seems to be causing these issues. Resetting things to default in the Catalyst Control Center looks to have cleared up my issues!
