mintUpdate works, it gives almost the same as Ubuntu, minus kernel updates (at most times), maybe a few others as well, and of course updates Mint tools/software.

mint update breaks updates into 5 levels:

1. Certified packages tested or maintained by mint.

2. Recommended packages tested and approved by mint.

3. Safe packages. not tested by mint but believed to be safe.

4. Unsafe packages. could potentially affect the stability of systems
depending on hardware.

5. Dangerous packages.Known to affect the stability of systems
depending on certain specs or hardware.(I think kernel updates are found here)

updates for levels 1 through 3 are available by default.
you can choose which levels of updates are available in "preferences".

so, you can upgrade your kernel with mint update.
it just lets you know of the potential of stability loss by doing so.
