I have no Terminal Icon on Desktop [SOLVED]

Postby rickm1945 on Sun Jun 10, 2012 5:51 am

I installed Cinnamon over Maya, via with sudo apt-get update after the update I ran sudo apt-get install cinnamon, and I notice I have no way to bring up the terminal No Icon on Desktop. How can I fix this?

Press the super key (a.k.a. windows logo key)

Type "term"

Right-click the highlighted terminal entry

Choose add to desktop

I did that and there is no entry for the Terminal. Does this mean a reinstall of Cinnamon?

Then something has gone seriously wrong, I don't even think Gnome 3 can work without terminal installed? Do you have a screenshot of the menu not showing terminal?

There was an error running gnome-screenshot:

Failed to execute child process "gnome-screenshot" (No such file or directory)

Can not get a screen shot Do I need to reinstall Cinnamon I tried recovery and that did n't correct the problem.
I installed Cinnamon via sudo from LM 13 Mate. Sudo apt-get update, then ran sudo apt-get install Cinnamon. Can I reinstall from live DVD in the /home partition, without having to format the partition?

Your install seems proper f'ed up, so yes, probably an idea to reinstall :D

Make sure whatever you're installing from isn't corrupted or broken in some way.

Have you tried running it directly with Alt+F2?

Try by bringing up the run dialog box by hitting "Alt+F2", then type "gnome-terminal", if that doesn't work try typing "xterm".

I jst did a complete clean install from scratch. I tried your command now and it brought up the terminal. I will keep that command in my ref. log book.

I do want to thank all of you who helped me with this issue. :)

If your install isn't broken the terminal should be in menus like all other applications.

Just for general info: my install is fine (64-bit Maya on an HP laptop) and didn't have gnome-terminal installed. Had to install in manually via Synaptic. Not necessary to reinstall the complete distro...

Ok, guys sorry for bringing up an old thread but I believe I have a similar issue. What I am going to ask is closely related to an older thread that I posted some time ago http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=114629.

I'll do my best to keep it short. I had Ubuntu installed through wubi, I then I "properly" installed mint kde dual booted with W7 64bit. At that point I realised that by double clicking an .sh script that I create in ubuntu and transferred to mint, it didn't bring up the dialog box with the options display, run in terminal, e.t.c.

Today I installed the cinnamon desktop. By double clicking the .sh scripts, the dialog pops up but it doesn't run the script in terminal (nothing happens). The scripts run fine when are executed within the terminal. They are all executable and I have all the permissions.

Now the similarity with this thread (and I don't know if it is related to my issue) is that through the menu I can see and open the Konsole terminal. If I right click on a .sh script and choose which application to open it with, neither konsole, nor any terminal appears as an option.

Ctrl+Alt+T brings up the following error message "There was an error running gnome-terminal:Failed to execute child process "gnome-terminal" (No such file or directory)".
Typing term in the menu nothing matches the input.

I understand that this may be more than one question but on the other hand they may be close related.
Any idea? New to linux myself. Do my best to make it my primary OS.

I think you didn't have GNOME Terminal installed, so you can go to the package manager and install the package gnome-terminal.
