Royal mess-up after trying to upgrade to 13 "Maya"

Postby cg2916 on Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:51 am

I tried to install Linux Mint 13 through apt-get. Didn't work.

It still actually thinks it's 12. GNOME crashes when I try to load it (stuck in MATE), and I have no drivers. Not even the ethernet, although SOMEHOW my laptop was able to update.

How do I make it so that my computer is back to normal?

Download the maya .iso and burn to disc. Boot from it and run the installer. Choose the option to replace the existing install.

Will it delete my personal files?

Let me rephrase that: is there anyway that I can reinstall Mint without losing my files (other than the massive backup)?

Update: I've run an updates on it, although it had to stop mid-way through, and GNOME loads, BUT the X window system is all messed up. There is no top or bottom bar, nor are there min, max, and close buttons on the title bars of windows. I now have all of my drivers, though.

I'm thinking the window thing could be caused by this: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Try doing this from terminal (CTRL+Alt+1) do
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
cd ~
rm -r .*
sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop gnome*
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 start

Thanks, but I've gotten it pretty much fixed now. The ONLY difference (that I can find so far, other than some Java issues which I'm pretty sure are fixed now) is that I have to use GNOME 3 w/o Cinnamon (if I use it, it'll just freeze up). So pretty happy, although will be happier if someone can find a way to get Cinnamon on here.

GNOME 3/Cinnamon Help

Postby cg2916 on Fri Jun 15, 2012 2:51 am

I tried upgrading to 13 "Maya" via APT. Didn't go well, almost broke the whole system. It's just about fixed now, with some GNOME issues.

I can't use Cinnamon. It hangs as soon as I log in, totally frozen. Having to use GNOME 3. Problems:

When I go into full screen while a non-minimizable window is open, the top bar stays. HOWEVER, if a non-window (say, Skype alert) pops up, it goes away!

Every so often, I'll be browsing YouTube, and Flash LAGS. I go to play a Flash game, same thing. Restart browser, same thing. Ctrl+Alt+Bkspce, fixed!

How do I fix these issues?

I have had these dramas trying to install cinnamon alongside gnome. Your best bet is to save anything you want to keep externally then have a fresh install of the DE you want to use. gnome doesn't like cinnamon but cinnamon doesn't care :P

you are lucky it is minor issues! At work I did the same and then i couldnt log into a graphical session! CLI only is ok but no fun, turned out the xgreeter process wasnt working because unity-greeter was unloaded by cinnamon.

too late now, but never upgrade, always clean install. If your desktops are this broken, there is no way around it anyway :(
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!
