Wallpaper directory question LM13

Postby LoneWolf_53 on Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:37 am

So I've installed LM13 X64 and have been tweaking appearance.

I have a number of jpg's for use as wallpaper which I dropped into the /usr/share/backgrounds/LinuxMint-Maya-Extras folder and made sure that I did it as root and matched the permissions to the photos already in the LinuxMint-Maya-Extras directory.

The thing is I can't figure out for the life of me why they will not show up in the appearance window under the rest of the existing wallpapers that were already in there?

I can click on the + then manually navigate to /usr/share/backgrounds/LinuxMint-Maya-Extras and select them that way but why won't they show up with the others in the same folder?

Didn't think it was that hard of a question for some of the experts in here so what gives?

Trying to learn a bit more about how linux works but it seems when I search this place I find more questions unanswered than anything else.

Share the wealth people. :D

I have exactly the same problem as you. It just may be a bug that needs to be reported. Since Cinnamon is such a new project, it's going to have its share of hiccups.

Meanwhile, if you put your wallpaper images into the Pictures folder in your Home directory, it will show up under the Pictures Folder radio button.

Thanks for the feedback. I think you may be right that it's a bug as I've checked and double checked and there's nothing I'm doing any different.

Yeah I saw the "pictures" folder thing but I'm just one of those types that are bothered when something doesn't work as it should and I keep at it until it's solved.

Besides my pictures folder is huge so it's just simpler to see my wallpaper show up as wallpaper.

I even went so far as to try putting it into the "backgrounds" folder directly, as well as into each Linux Mint existing wallpaper folder, none of which made any difference. Might add I rebooted after each effort also as I know some changes require that in order to manifest themselves.

I totally get what you're saying, because I'm often like that, too. As far as this particular issue is concerned, I don't change my wallpaper that often anyway, so once I set it, I can pretty much forget it. I just use the "+" button and manually add the picture from the correct directory. You can also drag-drop the picture into the Wallpaper pane and that will change the wallpaper as well.

What bothers me more right now is the fact that I can't log out using the logout command in Gnome-Do. Can't seem to find any answer for it either. :x :D

I just have mint on a machine to fool around with and am beginning to think this version is a bit off for some reason.

Previously I always liked going to the Linux box because it was so much quicker than Windows but ever since I installed LM13 the Win7 PC has been quicker and more responsive. Both PC's have the same hardware components.

I just find this LM13 seems to hang a lot when I'm doing things whereas I did not note the same with LM12. For that matter performance was better back when I was using fancy themes and had compiz with the cube running.

ostYea, i haven't had much experience with ealier Linux Mint distros. I mostly (and only recently) use Ubuntu. I am just getting tired of Gnome2 and just don't like Unity very much. But at the same time Windows drives me crazy with all its restrictions and how annoyingly proprietary they are with all their software and stuff. Something like Microsoft Office should just be standard on their OS. I actually got into Linux based OS's because my windows kept crashing on me.

I haven't upgraded to LM13 yet, but isn't Cinnamon still using bits and pieces of Gnome? I know on 12 they haven't totally ripped the guts of Gnome out of it.

On LM12, backgrounds saved out of your browser end up in ~/.cache/gnome-control-center/backgrounds

the images for background are stored

/usr/share/backgrounds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How i found this? easy, open a terminal (bash) window normally found in menu using search and when that terminal window opens type this...
locate backgrounds
try finding anything you want just remember locate string to find here (use above example)!!!
