Editing xorg.conf

Evening chaps,

It's my first day with Linux MINT, though I've been a long time Linux user. Anyway, things have installed rather well. The only thing I am having problems with is with my refresh rate. My screen settings are registering as 1280x1024 at 60Hz....when they should be registering at 1280x1024 at 75Hz. So the resolution is right. But the refresh rate is wrong.

Anyway, I took a peek at my xorg.conf file and it's set up as follows......

The horizontals and verticals however need to be.....

Horizsync 24kHz - 80kHz
Vertrefresh 50Hz - 75Hz

Anyway, I gave them a bit of a tweak by su-ing, opening up xorg.conf, changing the values to those immediately above and then saving. The result was, the refresh rate displayed correctly, and all seemed well. But on reboot it drops my adjustments and goes back to the old refresh rate. On looking at my xorg.conf file again, the values have been changed back to what they were originally.

My question is, why are the values not sticking on reboot......and what would be the best way to correct this problem?

P.S. I have the non-free nvidia drivers installed.

The values should not have change if you edited xorg.conf - if you used nvidia settings it's another story

Odd that 60 Hz is the default when they're capable of running so much higher. Windows used to run my monitor at 75 Hz, as did MEPIS. Oh well, thanks a lot for the links. I'll give them the once over tonight once I'm back home

75 is an alternative - it's different from CRT, 60 Hz there is unbearable....
