How to make an app always visible

Postby Tony G on Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:44 pm

I was playing around, installing different versions of PuppyLinux to a usb stick, when I noticed that at least one of the versions had GAIM set up so that it was always on the visible workspace. I tried implementing this in Pidgin in Mint Darnya (Gnome) by right-clicking on the top bar and selecting "Always on Visible Workspace" ("avw") However, it only lasts until I close Pidgin (or Firefox--I tried it with Firefox too).

Does anyone know how to make the avw permanent, so that a program is truly avw, session to session?

Thanks,

Anthony

I think its possible with --geometry options on the application, but I think it only works from terminal.

Thanks for the response, though I was hoping for something simpler than a command-line style hack. But I appreciate your time and assistance.

Anyone got something simpler?

Best,

Anthony

You'll most likely need a "command line hack" and edit the launcher for the application.

In KDE, there is a way to define a particular behaviour for a particular type of window when you right-click on it.
If you're using gnome, i dont know if this is also possible.

You could also change the window list behavior so all windows are shown on all desktops.

Faktor,

I think that auto-start is done in Sessions, but it's been a while since I fooled there. But I'm wondering how to make the Pidgin buddy list window show on all workspaces by default, rather than defaulting always to "on this workplace only."

Magnus,

I'd be curious to learn how to alter the window-list behavior, but I think the cure would be worse than the disease.

Given that I recently hacked Grub in order to triple-boot with XP and PCLOS, though, maybe I'm not so scared of the command-line now. Would I use jdgiotta's devilspie to do it, or would I just muck around in gedit?

Thanks all,

Anthony

I need a screenshot to properly explain it, but the window list is placed on the panel, to right of mintMenu. Right click on this, and select Properties or something (you will know if you got the right one). I'll post a screenshot if you can't find it...

Indeed, Ed. Thus, I'm now a happy Mint KDE CE convert.
