Compiz with KDE4 Community Edition and ATI X700

Postby Iko on Mon Apr 07, 2008 8:24 am

Hi all,

i have problems activating compiz on my laptop...installed the ATI driver using envy, but if i hit "Enable 3d Effects" my screen will turn from black in white with a black cursor and nothing else happens...then i need to restart X with Strg+Alt+Backspace...:-(
Any Idea getting it working?
With live CDs like Knoppix does it work, so it should be supported by HW :)

Not an answer but have you tried KDE's own effects, found under "Desktop" I think?
It includes transperecy, shadows etc.

No it's not enabled by default.
Check in Settings, Desktop, Window behaviour...
Only guessing since I use a Swedish version...

Did I miss something? When did we get a KDE4 Community Edition?

Anyway, this would likely be due to KDE4 having it's own, built-in compositing engine, and you trying to run another one on top of that ;)

I am relatively new at Linux but in my experience I have had nothing but bad luck with the ATI video cards and drivers. Conversely, I have had great success with the Nvidia cards and drivers. Good luck!

P.S. I also run the KDE 4.0 Edition and it rocks!
