upgrade forthcoming version of linux mint???

Can upgrade to a new version of linux mint be possible without losing existing files, personal config, etc,

The best is to use a separate home partition and you always keep it - take a look in the wiki for more info
And yes, there is to be an upgrade path, but it is not until version 6 that this will be really easy

In my opinion the tip about a separate home partition is so crucial that it should be properly explained and pointed out as the preferred way to install in the User Guide.
