Manually Updating Linux Mint?

Ok i searched for a related topic but i couldnt find anything that was to do with my issue. My modem isnt working and i dont know how i would install the drivers for it, the same with my sound card. Also Envy is telling me i need to install a few things in order to i\nstall my video card. Could someone please help me.

Ok i have got my sound working some how. i ended up doing the same thing i was doing with windows and starting up BIOS and then save and exit and rebooting but i still cant find my modem.
