sound when booting from CD but not from HDD

Postby sumanameghu on Thu Nov 29, 2012 8:58 am

Hi,
I've installed Linux Mint 14. Strange thing...when I initially put in the install disk and booted up from it, the sound was working. after i completed install and boot from HDD, there is no sound. when I right click the speaker icon in the tray and choose preferences I see nothing in the hardware tab. In the hardware info report I do see this entry
Multimedia audio controller : VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)

What should I do next?

Thanks

Hi,
I have truly searched the forums and Google to find a fix. I'm flummoxed that it would work when booting from CD, so didn't want to embark on complicated fixes involving alsamixer and so on. Even tried the instructions from here
http://www.mysamplecode.com/2012/05/no- ... nt-12.html
My PC is pretty much useless w/o sound.

Would really appreciate some insight.

Thanks!

...
I've had this problem with other Debian based distros.
My current distro is Mint 13 xfce 64-bit.
I have a HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer).
Here is how I've solved my sound problem.

On your desktop left click the sound your sound icon.
This should bring up a small window with the words
"Sound Settings" at the bottom.
Left click on Sound Settings.
This should bring up your Sound Mixer.
On my Sound Mixer I have a "Select Controls"
box at the bottom. Click on it.
Select the Controls you require and Close.
Adjust the Controls.
You should now have sound.

You might want to try this with the live CD
and compare with HD install.

If this corrects your issue, please edit your question as [SOLVED]
