I want to download some software but I'm faced with the option to download deb, rpm or tar.
Which one do I need and how would I find this information. I looked all through control centre, system where I would expect to find such information, but nothing.
Mint 11 and Ubuntu 11.04 aren't supported anymore. The repositories might still be open (I'm not sure), but either way you should probably upgrade (suggestions are in the EOL announcement)
Most of the time, it isn't recommended to install packages by downloading them from a website, and if you do, the website often tells you which version to download for which distro - like google's chrome download. Also, PPAs have lots of software not in the official repos, and they usually work better than downloading a package from a website.
