I did not find any actual postings on the subject, the SCIM page in ubuntu is marked as seriously outdated.

Question: What is the best up to date recommendation to write in other character sets like Chinese, Arabic or Russion. Am on Mint14 cinnamon, but this is a general question as a guide for all of us.

I also want to know what input method is recommended for Chinese. I started trying to SCIM but I can't seem to get it to use Chinese. I seem to be missing a step. I also saw the outdated (and useless) Ubuntu SCIM page. Unfortunately, on the Linux Mint website I don't see any documentation at all for foreign language input.

Use iBus instead, iBus is still maintained, and works very good on my machine. There are many input methods for iBus, you can use Synaptic to select them.

That is good advice. I had no problems with ibus. After installing it and the appropriate input method (in my case, ibus-pinyin for simplified Chinese) it worked. I would encourage anyone to give up on scim and go with ibus.
