i made live usb to boot up when i want to use lm. so far op is fine, used universal usb installer. i found out i was live session user and root user. no trouble. any reason to create a new user with limited permissions? 2nd. how can i tell if usb install is persistent? i thought i created at least 2 gigs of free space. under storage it recognizes the usb, but not size or content. where do i look on the mate desktop to verify persistance?

Verify persistence: right click on desktop, create a blank file. Reboot, if file still there, bingo.

The persistence must be specified in the grub loader, then you have to make a persistence file - which universal usb installer should do automatically.
You'll only have a live user on a live cd/usb I dont think the system will recognise the new user account on reboot..

I use Unetbootin any time I use a live usb with persistence http://dl.dropbox.com/u/386753/out-5.ogv

i tried unetbootin this morning and made a live usb with lm 14 cin. the creator did not give me any prompts for persistence.
could i have downloaded an old version of unetboot? i watched the link video part way as it froze. i will try again later.
Cin. is a little different. actually its a good thing to try some other versions of lm. it is amazing that its basically seamless
as an OS.

I does not prompt you. it expects you to see, below the iso select box, another box with the words "space used to preserve files across reboots(ubuntu only)"
This means persistence and Ubuntu only means any Ubuntu derivative or any thing that is has ubuntu as its base - Mint, Pinguy,Zorin,Peppermint, Elementary, Pear, ect.
You need to use at least 500mb, but 1000mb and above is better for persistence.

BTW The long pause is while the image is being writen to the usb... It could take 10mins depending on your computer.

i remade lm 14 cin. with unetbootin. i figured i had to set to some figure <4gb. fine. i did see that the persistence file was being created and which took 10 minutes to complete. i made a folder, named it, then reset the pc. file was not there.do i need to go into boot loader now? with persistence, how will time react? redo each time after boot?

Try 1000MB first.
When youve made the USB with Netbootin or universal usb installer do not reboot.

From windows open the usb and you should see a file roughly the same size as the persistence you specified the file will be named casper-rw
If its there you should be able to save to the persistence file - that is settings docs ect.

thanks for response. i rebooted before i read your most recent post. i found the file and size and turned it on.i dont see any way to save it? otherwise persistance is futile. i set persistence for 1 gb.
