Lost MintUpdate icon

Postby Andy T on Sat May 10, 2008 8:31 am

Somehow, I've been dim enough to remove the MintUpdate lock icon from my panel, and I'd very much like to reinstate it. It's not available in the "add to panel ..." window, and dropping MintUpdate from the menu onto the panel adds the shield icon. Update still works fine, but I'd like the visual warning of available downloads. I'm running Daryna light edition, and incidentally I can't overemphasise how impressed I am with it. Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Andy,

Have you rebooted yet? I know I keep my mintUpdate applet turned off all the time, but it will show back up after a reboot. That might help in your situation, but not sure. It depends on what made it vanish in the first place. Good luck.

Nope, rebooting hasn't caused it to reappear. I'm not entirely sure what I did to lose it: there was a very faint narrow box on the panel adjacent to the icon [it's not there now] which I took to be a separator and tried to "remove from panel", and probably took out MintUpdate instead, but as I say, I'm not certain that this was what happened.

Have you verified that it is Mint Update is set to startup in sessions?

Ahem ... I have now! And it is set to start, by default I imagine. In the "sessions options" tab, running programs are not remembered at logout, by the way, which I guess is why rebooting didn't resolve the problem.

So mintUpdate works, and you can add an icon per this post:
It's not available in the "add to panel ..." window, and dropping MintUpdate from the menu onto the panel adds the shield icon. Update still works fine, but I'd like the visual warning of available downloads.

So if you have the shield in the tray and you open MintUpdate, and select preferences and then icons what icons are displayed? If its the shield can you change the icon to what is located at: /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/icons?

Okay ... tried that, and peculiarly when I click into the "new icon" dialogue it opens in /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/tmp, rather than the "icons" folder. When I attempted to change the icons to the padlocks there was no change, and entering "new icon" again brought me to /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/tmp. Strange. Result: I still have the shield on the panel. I now suspect that I might have done something dumber than I first thought, although it's only an annoyance rather than a full on problem as such.

Thanks for the speedy reply, and as you no doubt suspect, no I don't. I should have mentioned that in the first instance of course; sorry everyone.

Right click on panel, select add to panel and find Notification area on the list...

Feeling distinctly foolish now: yes, that did it. Many thanks for putting me right, and that's the last time I'll make that particular mistake. I'll help myself to a slice of humble pie. :-)

You are not the first one to do this, a common mistake :)
