Trying to copy a 725Mb file. In nautilus, from a terminal with dd and cp. Fails everytime at 261Mb. Get an input output "splicing error" after it hangs for about 10 minutes. Searched thh forums and can't really find anything that solves this. Release 12 Lisa. Copy from ext4 across smb to win 7 box and/or to NTFS usb thumb drive.

What kind of file is it you try to copy? And what is the source: external drive? Internal drive? And what is the destination: external drive or internal drive? What's the fileformat of the drive(s) => ext4/ext3/NTFS??

Mint 12 is rather a bit outdated right now. Linux Mint 12 will be supported until April 2013. After that Mint 12 will be no longer supported and then might it be smart to switch to an newer version of Mint. Jst a hint.

it's a .avi file from an internal ext4 drive. Tried to copy it to a win 7 box via smb. Samae fail at about 260Mb. Also tried to copy to a thumb drive that is NTFS. The advice to upgrade is a good one. I believe I will go that rout. Thanks.

I did a search on the internet and the most reason's for this problem i could find is: the file is too large, it is a sparse file (a file with holes, data that has not been filled so when copying it stumbles over those holes), the .avi file is broken (likewise as a sparse file)...

But it is not an unknown issue on this forum: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=65356.
Another thread on this forum: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=84554.

But a workable solution?? I didn't found that....
