Google Earth stops loading at splash screen

Postby Retreaded Bear on Fri Jan 25, 2013 8:07 pm

In terms of Linux, I'm about as newbie as it gets. But was a computer professional for 20 years, just not Linux.
Anyway, I wanted to load Google Earth on a PC that I just finished loading Mint 14.1 on. On launch the splash
screen opens for about the normal amount of time, but then the screen goes away, and software doesn't load any
further. I've spent the better part of the afternoon looking through forums, and googling the problem. I've tried
installing the version on Synaptic as well as the .deb file from Google Earth download page. I've also tried re-installing
lsb-core and lsb-base on the suggestion of someone that had success doing that. Didn't work.

I would greatly appreciate any help, but you'll need to assume that any suggestion you make will need to be more detailed
for a newbie.

Thanks

I usually need to add either an OpenDNS or a google DNS Server to the IPv4 settings, but I never fully understood why. You might check to see if Google earth is connected to its server (There will be a "Server Logout" entry in the file menu if you are connected).

If not connected to the server then left click on the network icon->network settings->options->IPv4 Settings_>DNS Servers

I use OpenDNS on this computer, plus one Google DNS Server.

208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220, 8.8.8.8

My notes have this as a reference:
http://rohieb.wordpress.com/2011/01/22/google-earth-and-ipv6-dns-lookups/

But this is old, do not edit /etc/resolv.conf, use the method I outlined above to add DNS servers.

1- I don't know if re-installing lsb-core, lsb-base will generate problems.

2- First of all, go to your hidden files and delete .google-earth directory because there are the preferences settings that would generate problems.

3- Try synaptic version of google-earth; it is OK?, then OK; not OK? go to your hidden files and delete .google-earth directory

4- Download google-earth from a google site, see that there are two versions, the default version is 7.x (unstable), there is hidden a old version (stable), 6.x. Remember, first delete .google-earth directory before a new attempt.

5- Not yet? Try another DE (kde, mate)

Also open a terminal and check the output of:
Code: Select all
inxi -Gx

and make sure it shows "Direct Rendering: Yes

Hi,

I'm using Mint 14 32 bit with Cinnamon. I have tried both the Software Manager and the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm using an old Toshiba A-10 Satellite laptop, and perhaps that is part of the problem.

I also have the same problem with Google Earth. I am such a newbie that most of the instructions here did not make total sense to me. However, I did notice my direct rendering is set to N/A instead of Yes. How do I change that?

Try to reinstall the driver:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

If it is not already in the repository, try

Code: Select all
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

I don't know if it works, I don't have a Intel chipset.

Hi Jungle Boy,

Thanks for your suggestions; unfortunately, the Google Earth just shows the splash screen and then disappears.

First I tried the following:

------------------------------

jerry@jerry-Satellite-A10 ~ $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
[sudo] password for jerry:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
xserver-xorg-video-intel is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
cairo-dock-core cairo-dock-data cairo-dock-plug-ins cairo-dock-plug-ins-data
cairo-dock-plug-ins-dbus-interface-python cairo-dock-plug-ins-integration
compiz-core compiz-plugins compiz-plugins-default dreamchess-data libetpan15
libgldi3 libmxml1
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

----------------------------------------

Then, I went ahead and used "sudo apt-get autoremove" and got rid of some programs that I thought I had already removed (Cairo Dock and Dreamchess).

Next, I copied the other three lines you suggested with these results:

-------------------------------------

jerry@jerry-Satellite-A10 ~ $ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
You are about to add the following PPA to your system:
Updated versions of Intel graphics driver.

For Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 driver version 2.15 will be installed. If you're using Ubuntu 11.10 aka Oneiric Ocelot, driver-version 2.17 will be installed. For Ubuntu 12.04 version 2.20 will be installed. This version allows runtime-switching of the accel method via xorg.conf (UXA or SNA). As standard the old "UXA" acceleration is used. To use "SNA" you have to create a xorg.conf-file with the following content:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection

Warning :

All versions since 2.15 of the Intel-driver only support KMS. If you've deactivated KMS e.g. by adding the option "i915.modeset=0" to the file "/etc/default/grub", please reactivate KMS by deleting this option.

Did you try to install the old version of google-earth, available in the site?
