Can open terminal-can't see anything else-mint 13 <CLOSED>

Postby scot^2 on Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:32 am

When booting up I get a black screen and I can see and move my mouse around. I can access the terminal using ctrl-alt-T and I can enter commands there although I can't see what I'm typing.

I can access my hard drive through the live CD.

I removed some packages using Synaptic before this happened, packages that were supposedly obsolute and some residual config files.

Do you have any suggestions that don't involve complete re-installation?

I was using mint 13 and cinnamon 1.6.

Thanks!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Use the Live cd to chroot your installed system and run synaptic

Thanks for the quick response!

Can you elaborate? How do I "chroot" from the terminal? Just type it and press enter? Will Synaptic then be available? What do I do once I access Synaptic?

Thanks again.

Once running the live CD

* Open a terminal and type

$ sudo fdisk -l

* Now, you need to remember which device listed is your Mint root, for reference, /dev/sda1 will be used. Now we need to mount the filesystem to /mnt

$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

* Now mount the rest of your devices

$ sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev

* Now chroot into your system

$ sudo chroot /mnt

Now try this

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get --reinstall mint-meta-core mint-meta-cinnamon

once done
reboot

Synaptic is a truly great program - one of the best gui programs linux has ever produced in my opinion, but that doesn't mean it is perfect. Where is says a program is

"Installed (Local or Obsolete)"

It means it can be either locally installed or obsolete so you remove them at your own risk. For example Synaptic tells me that my current running kernel is "local or obsolete" because I installed it not through the package manager but by download. I am sure you can understand how responsive my pc would become if I tried to remove the running kernel (well it wouldn't actually do it, but this just illustrates the point I am making).

If it says something is "auto-removable", that you can trust, but "Local or Obsolete" NEVER!

Too late now in this instance but try and remember that another time. Even for someone like myself with English as a first language, that heading is poorly written and should be changed.

As for your present problem, there have been quite a few reports recently of people getting started up with brightness set to zero. This could be the case for you in which case have a look at this answer>

Thanks. After chroot-ing and then entering the code I get the following error:

E: Invalid operation mint-meta-core

The command should be

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mint-meta-core mint-meta-cinnamon

But before reinstalling things at random, my opinion is that it would be a good idea to know what it was you actually removed.

To do this you would run the command:

Code: Select all
cat /var/log/apt/history.log

And look at the last entry.

Providing you are sure you haven't just got the brightness turned down that is.

I can't re-boot right now to check the brightness though because I'm typing up a school paper. In any case, do you see the culprit in the log?

Thanks again.

IMO
You should just do a new install

Yeah, I would like to upgrade to mint 14 anyway, so now seems like a good time. However, I have about 550 GB of files on the hard drive and I can't figure out a way now to temporarily store them somewhere so I can then wipe the drive and do the fresh install of mint 14.

Open Gparted in the live session and post a screen of your partition setup
We may be able to suggest something

Well the most obvious thing there is that you have removed Cinnamon and nemo. So therefore (unless you are using mate), you will have no desktop and no filemanager. So I would start by reinstalling those two. You have to go back into your chroot and do

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install cinnamon nemo

Of course there are dozens of other things you removed on the 30th Jan, you may have to go through the whole lot for all I know. In which case caf4926 is probably right, reinstalling would be easier.

It shows like only 50 GB being used but I thought I had a file on my desktop that's 248 GB of music. I was mistaken. I have 248 GB of free space.

Thanks. I'll re-install cinnamon and nemo. I'll get back here later today --- going to class now.

Thanks again. I greatly appreciate it.

Yes it does.

Code: Select all
apt-cache policy nemo
nemo:
  Installed: 1.1.2+nadia
  Candidate: 1.1.2+nadia
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.2+nadia 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ nadia/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

That is nadia of course, I am not using maya, but it still exists

Maybe you don't have backports enabled in your repositories. You would need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to change

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import

to

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import backport

then

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Then try again.

OTOH you could just forget about nemo for now and just install cinnamon on its own and see if that gets you going. Install nemo later on.

I re-installed Cinnamon and it didn't work. I checked the brightness but that didn't work either. I re-installed mint-meta-cinnamon and that worked partially. I have a desktop with the files showing but no panels or menu button to access any software. I'm on the internet now because I had an html file saved on my desktop.

I did not have backported packages enabled. I accessed the sources.list but I can't enter any text for some reason.

I was able to change the appropriate sources.list to backport by opening the file as an administrator.

I then installed nemo, then updated, then rebooted. The panels and menu button and hence software access is not there.

Any other suggestions?

I appreciate it.
