Sound settings aren't persistant, am I doing something wrong

Hi,
I've recently installed Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64bit edition and I'm having issues with the sound settings. My machine has a Asus Xonar D2X card. I'm getting sound from the OS itself but when I tried to use a program like Mumble I couldn't hear anything. So I played around with the Sound settings panel, it seemed obvious that I needed to select the device I wanted for output and input. I did this and it worked fine, however everytime I boot the machine the Sound setting options are reset and I have to reconfigure these options. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug of some kind, it doesn't seem like expected behaviour?
On another note my mic is also really quiet, I've checked alsamixer and ramped up all the volume sliders in Sound settings and in Mumble but it's still no where near the volume I get when using Windows 7. Any advise?
Thanks.
