On-Screen Keyboard

Hey all,
I'm new to Linux, as in I installed it 6 days ago, and I could use some help. I am physically disabled and I utilize the on-screen keyboard native to Windows 7 for all of my typing needs. Yes, clicking on each individual letter via mouse is tedious but I've become quite proficient. As mentioned, I installed the new Linux Mint Mate 64-bit distro as a dual-boot with W7 on my laptop. I very much enjoy learning it but without a native on-screen keyboard (that I'm aware of, so far) my use of it is fairly stunted as you could imagine. I tried Cinnamon's on-screen but it eats up half the screen as is, to my knowledge, not malleable like the W7 version. I've searched on my own and found little of use to solve my problem. So, here I am asking you fine people. Is anyone aware of a similarly malleable on-screen keyboard that is compatible to Linux Mint Mate?

Install onboard. It's in your software manager. If you want to use the terminal simply enter:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install onboard

It's the best on-screen keyboard Enjoy

Sorry for reviving this thread but I was on the same situation

Well I am on LMDE 201303 Cinnamon x64 and want to install onboard
I used the mentioned command:

sudo apt-get install onboard

But I am getting this:

$ sudo apt-get install onboard
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree       
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package onboard


Am I missing something for it to show up or is there anything else I could try?

Onboard is a Ubuntu feature and Debian is a separate distro. As far as I know (I'm a newb, so take my reply as that) Deb and Ubuntu aren't mixable.

It's not as customizable as Onboard though and I found it to be rather cumbersome. I used it briefly myself before I switched to Mint Cinnamon for Onboard.

You can also search synaptic (search florence) or apt-get install florence in the terminal and it should work like Onboard. Let me know if it works
