Interface dissappears whenever I do anything graphical

I cant work with 3d graphics intensive programs without it making my taskbar disappear and it puts a white line around the screen. This includes but I am sure is not limited to

Wine apps all of them
Recordmydesktop - (When I record)
Alias Autodesk Maya - (When I go full screen and come back I have to hard reset Xorg to get it back)
OpenSCAD - (When I click "Run 3D simulator")
Blender (when I run the 3D in full screen or in windowed mode)

Is there an option somewhere I can turn off the awesome 3D graphics and effects and not have this happen because it is a deal killer NOT to be able to work with my UI when doing my daily job.

EDIT: disabling effects doesn't resolve this issue.

From your login screen, under settings, select "Cinnamon 2D".
