Service networking restart crash ?

Hi, just fired up Cinnamon Nadia 64bit today, looks great.
I don't like network managers so I gave myself a static ip address and threw out the network manager.
When I did sudo service networking restart everything chrased, keyboard was locked and mouse.
I had to shutdown the computer and the network worked fine on my static ip, just wanted to try
the command again, maybe it was a fluke, happened again.
I tried Ubuntu 12.10 the other day, didn't like it much but it has the same problem as described here
and it was reported more then a year ago.
Maybe it's not a bug but a feature or maybe I'm just doing it wrong....
Google "ubuntu service networking restart crash", guess I'm not the only one.
Thanks, any info would be great.
