Why is there no remote desktop?

Postby LLL on Mon Feb 25, 2013 10:50 am

I've used ubuntu for years and it's always had remote desktop working out of the box.

Apparently mint 13 had remote desktop, too. But mint 14 does not seem to support it.

Why have you all decided that remote desktop is not worth supporting any more?

I use a linux box as my test server and it's pretty useless without remote desktop.

I am currently trying teamviewer but so far that's had only passable success.

I've also noticed on this board that whenever some one posts on this question of remote desktop there is often no replies. So maybe this is an embarrassment. If so why don't you just fix it. It can't be that hard.

You are trying to RDP into your Mint 14 correct? From Windows I assume?

I'm guessing you did this right > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkuNULcMP_Q

I use TeamViewer and it's worked fine for me, even from an Android tablet.

Hi Empire,

Yes, I looked at that video and I tried to follow those instructions but those screens do not exist in Linux Mint 14. They are there in 13 but not 14. And that's why there is a problem. If 14 worked like 13, I would not have a problem.

I've looked for similar videos for 14 with no luck.

Thanks for responding.

Are you running Mint 14 Cinnamon?
Wait, so if you go to Menu > Preferences > Desktop Sharing you're saying you don't have anything?

Bc if I go there I have that and I can choose to Allow Desktop Sharing and set a password etc etc.
Then I go to my Windows 7 PC and use UltraVNC (or any other VNC product) and enter my Mint 14's IP address it works...I haven't done any other configuring other than the "Desktop Sharing" thing I just discribed.
I use Mint 14 Nadia Cinnamon btw

I'm running Mint 14 KDE.

Maybe I will change, because what you describe is exactly what I am looking for.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with KDE really, I've never used it on any distro of Linux that I've tried.
Although, ironically, I installed Mint 14 KDE on a spare work laptop last night so I can take a look for you once I get home from work tonight. Fortuitous huh lol

Well I grew up semi-close to Blackpool so I've been a Tangerine for many years now.....although since I moved to the states I'm not a die-hard anymore (I can't get any of the matches from the Championship on TV anymore).
I get to follow the EPL pretty closely however bc they play loads of games now, football is rather taking off here stateside, so I basically support any team playing against Citeh or Chelski

PS. dont make jokes about our current run of form please, I know we had 1 good run and now we're floundering in the merk =]

I have mates from Blackpool that are Blackpool fans, been there a couple of times now and once when in the boxes for a meal before we drew 1-1 on the last game of the season a few years back.

Yeah must be hard being in the States and following football, what's their commentary like?

Much much harder. Fox Soccer Channel used to show Championship matches but they lost the rights. GolTV used to show Bundesliga matches but they lost the rights. This new channel called BeIN Sports or something (some Middle East TV company owns it I believe) has came in and bought up all the rights.
Although, amazingly NBC won the exclusive rights to broadcast the EPL games starting next year! They will air even more games then Fox or ESPN did! I'm so happy lol http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/66/united-states/2012/10/29/3486994/nbc-acquires-english-premier-league-us-tv-rights

But the following is growing, largely due to the US Mens team playing better I'm sure. I usually hit up an "Irish" pub on Sat or Sun morning to catch a match.
