Software Manager not installing applications on Linux Mint10

Post by Janndavid »

This is getting on my nerves, I've not been able to install any applications from the Software Manager, the install button simply dissapears, I've scavenged the internet for solutions, I've typed alot of codes into the terminal, I get nothing but errors. I'm would be very glad if someone here could help me fix this problem, since I in the end might have to switch from Linux again, I hope you understand that choice, what's fun about it when you can't talk with your friends on skype, or download fun applications. Another thing I've also tried is downloading with the terminal, here I get nothing but errors aswell, and I can't even remove the application again, please help! I like Linux alot.

Hello Janndavid and welcome to mint,

The reason your unable to install software is because LM10 has been obsolete since April of 2012. thus the repositories are no long available.
you need to install linux mint 12 or above then you'll be able to install software.

here's a page that list the life cycle of each release of Mint.

I'd recommend you install Linux Mint 13 or 14, and no older than that. Linux Mint 13 is the current long term support release, with support till April 2017. Linux Mint 14 is the latest release with the newest software; support till April 2014. You can download either from kc1di's link.

If you are currently using the main edition of Linux Mint 10 (GNOME 2), you would probably enjoy either the Cinnamon or MATE editions. GNOME 2 has been discontinued, though MATE is the continuation of GNOME 2 under a new name. Cinnamon aspires to give you a somewhat similar experience (a task bar at the bottom of your screen with a list of active applications, and applications organized into categories in your menu) but using modern technologies. Cinnamon is developed by the Linux Mint project and is an exciting desktop environment

Ahh, I see, many thanks you guys, I shall get Linux 13-14, I'll decide when I've read up on them. Once again thank you, I'm very happy about this.
