Where have my menu panels gone?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I've been installing Mint 14 MATE on two machines at the same time: the 64 bit version on a desktop and the 32 on a laptop. Last night the last thing I did on both was install the screenlets packages. On rebooting the laptop today I found I had lost all my settings, desktop background, menu and panel. ALT +F2 did nothing. I reinstalled everything (except the screenlets). Seems fine.
So just now I booted up the deskop PC and exactly the same thing has happened! Is there any way back from this or do I have to do a complete reinstall here too? What's going on? Is there any way I can access the terminal to reinstall MATE?
I really don't want to go all the way back to the start on this one, I had a few driver hassles to get this far.

Never mind, I'm reinstalling.
Can I assume this is just a bug in Nadia?

I could be mistaken, but I believe the Screenlets application is for GTK3 based sytems like Cinnamon or Ubuntu. MATE is a different animal.

Ah, that would explain it.
I was following tips from another site:

Maybe I should just make sure I get my tips from here instead.
