Can Mint be optimized on a triple core?

I've got a Gateway desktop with an AMD triple core processor. Is it possible to optimize the system to make better use of the triple cores? I'm just curious since a few things like Opera and other applications are sometimes sluggish. Thanks!

Ok, the kernel is SMP, which is the right one, so we need to look elsewhere.
Are you running Mint 14? Xfce? KDE? Cinnamon? MATE? LMDE?

Ah, that'll do it. Cinnamon is very graphics intensive and will cause lag if your video card is a bit on the slow side. I recommend that you look at the MATE edition. It is much less power hungry.

I had a feeling it was Cinnamon. I'll check out Mate then. Thanks.
