SOLUTION:
This apparently is a bug. From the command line:

$ fsdesktop

fixes it and restores the wallpaper and desktop icons.

Gosh, my Mint is messed up, and I don't know how it happened. I need help.

I installed Mint+Xfce 14 and set it up: fonts, desktop image, etc. Then I rebooted and the desktop is black with no icons. The 'Menu' button seems to work.

Where do I start?

Create another user and see if everything is ok with the new account. If it is, use it permanently, why bother?
