Preventing Gnome daemon from starting at startup in Xfce

I'm running Mint 13 Xfce and am having problems configuring the desktop notifications (the little informative bubbles that appear when I, for example, change the volume). I've installed xfce4-notifyd-config , which is a small GUI to customize e.g. notification appearance position and time.

However, it doesn't work. I've learned that if I kill the following daemon:

/usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd

and, in a terminal, manually start up:

/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/xfce4/notifyd/xfce4-notifyd

then I am able to customize the Xfce desktop notifications; the customizations disappear when I close the terminal window.

So my question is -- how can I prevent the first daeomon from starting when the system starts up, and how can I make the second daemon start up instead?

(BTW, notify-osd is a Gnome daemon -- why is it running on startup in Xfce?)

Turns out the answer was simple: uninstall notify osd.
