I have been using Daryna successfully for some time and have some proficiency with command line interface.
I have also used Ubuntu on other computers and successfully upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. It's easy to upgrade with Ubuntu.
How do I do a "clean" install of Elyssa and retain all the settings and data from my Daryna installation?
Maybe I'm dense, but it's not at all clear to me. Is the key the "migrate" step in the install?
This machine has two hard drives. One is dedicated to Linux. the other is dedicasted to Win XP. GRUB dual boot works fine, and I know how to edit the GRUB menu.lst file.

You can do an upgrade, but a clean install is usually preferred. If you want to know the details, check the release notes for Elyssa.
An other method is to keep the /home partition as is, if you have a home partition that is. A third options is to export all hidden folders in /home/username and import them after install...
But the foolproof way to keep all settings is an upgrade, which I have found to be a bit unstable at times...

I've recently done an apt-get dist-upgrade to Daryna and things are stable.
I don't have a /home partition.
I've read the Wiki regarding how to move home to its own partition, but again have no experience with that.
There's so much embedded jargon, and being a precise EE-type, I need definitions and understanding before I screw around.

You might want to try using my back-up script in the How-to section of this forum.
Set it up to back-up just your data and config files to a different partition for safe keeping.
Make your clean install using the same user name that you used for the backed-up install.
Put the .ShellScripts folder that is in your back-up into your new install /home folder.
Reinstall the bakclean script into the new install. If the partitions are the same you won't have to change the configuration. If they aren't you will need to change them in the script.
You can then restore your data and config files with the restore utility in the script.
