Menus no longer visible

Postby whitetr6 on Fri Jun 27, 2008 12:15 pm

Mint is installed successfully on my Thinkpad z60m. When I logged off last night all was well, but this morning when I log in, I have no menu bar. I must have changed something yesterday without realizing it. A reboot did not resolve the problem. If I move the mouse along the top or left side of the screen, the cursor is always visible. But if I move it to the bottom or right, it disappears. This leads me to think I just have the wrong screen resolution for my system. I can get to a command line, and the desktop icons work fine. Is there a command I can run that will help me change the screen resolution to see if that's the problem?
Thanks

I think your menu bar has gone below the screen. Try editing your reso in xorg.conf file. Its a text file located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf :)

First backup your current xorg by this command
Code: Select all
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorgold.conf

Now open for editing
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find a section in the file that look like this:
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
     Identifier"Default Screen"
     Monitor"Configured Monitor"
     Device"Configured Video Device"
     Defaultdepth24
EndSection

Change it to something like:
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
  Identifier"Default Screen"
  Monitor"Configured Monitor"
  Device"Configured Video Device"
  Defaultdepth24
       SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
EndSection

*change "1024x768" to whatever you use. First resolution in "modes" is the reso it will use to display.
*Note that X is uppercase in X11 but lowercase in xorg.conf
* If you are using KDE instead of GNOME, replace "gedit" by "kate".

Save the file and close the text editor.

Log out and Login back to let the changes take effect.

Thanks for your reply...editing xorg.conf as you suggest and entering the modes to work with my system worked. Thanks again!
