internet connection freezes

Postby nonsense on Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:55 am

As an eager newbie I have just completed a search in the forum on this problem but I must say that I didn't understand a word on most of the results that I got...so, back to this corner of the forum. Here's my question, on sunday mintupdate let me know that there were 30 updates available which I installed afterwards I was asked if I wanted to replace an old "etc file" (i think that was the name) with a newer one. I though that was a good idea. Ever since then my internet connection freezes after a couple of minutes although I am still connected. Any ideas on that matter?

If you are using Elyssa, please be aware of a slow or sudden stop internet connection bug that is similarly identified in Ubuntu 8.04. I have suggested other users to change their ISP DNS to OpenDNS for stable and reliable surfing. I have done it and see a better connection since then. Please refer to this thread if you please:

Let me know afterward. :)

My problem is not internet speed, my problem is the connection is lost and I have to turn the wireless off and back on for it to work for the next 5 minutes until it gets lost again. This happens with and without compiz.

Keep in mind that I have never installed any kind of driver, this is an out of the box problem, I have a cheap dlink 524 router but this also happens at other locations. I need some help with this as it is driving me crazy!

OK...reluctantly I followed tri's recommendations and did the opendns thing and yes....the problem still exists....this is really frustrating. Basically, my wireless network connection tells me I am connected and everything is fine, but I am unable to access and webpages, can't download updates as mintupdate tells me that it could not connect to the internet and so forth. I need some help here.

Once the connection drops, what steps do you take to restore it?

Gotcha, and does this only occur on your home network? Or does it occur regardless of where you're connecting wirelessly?

good question....can't use it at school as they don't support firefox 3, so I have always used vista (dual boot) but hold on..................just tried my neighbors unsecured wireless network and its the same issue works for a while but then stops.

Did you use the "out of the box" drivers? Or are you using ndiswrapper or something of the sort to get your wireless working?

out of the box....however, i checked if there is a ndiswrapper around and it showed a ubuntu package which included a ndiswrapper. I didn't do anything with it though as I have no idea how that works but i have recently downloaded an auto-ndiswrapper (i though "auto" sound great since i don't know what i'm doing). but when i tried to get it too work it told me that it would not support my wireless card.

Please remember to always try to use the latest version of NDISwrapper with this script
Sorry, card not yet supported by Auto-NDISwrapper
Save this output as it will help other people give you support
