I installed linux mint 15 mate a few months ago and up until now I have been having just minor problems with it that I have been able to fix.
Tonight, I tried moving the taskbar at the bottom (forgive my terrible vernacular I am beyond mad) to the top so that the start menu would open downward. After I moved it and changed around the location of some icons such as firefox and banshee, my laptop (Gateway Model: W350A ((T-1424u))) completely froze. Being a complete linux noob I just did a hard shut down hoping to resolve the problem.
Upon reboot, no desktop icons will load at all and on top of that the task bar, which did successfully make it to the top of the screen, is now 'shaking' (if that makes any sense)
My question is this, how can i solve this problem with a minimal lose of content. I have almost 150gb of pictures, movies, and music on this laptop and I can not loose it. I should probably add that a google search for 'shaking' taskbar on 15 mate reveled no results.
It should also be noted that I posted this same question on the mint sub-reddit last and received this response:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mate-core mate-desktop-environment
Upon typing this in the terminal I got the following error messages:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/mirrors.liquidweb.com_ubuntu_dists_raring_main_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
So, any idea what could be causing this issue and how I can fix it without loosing too much data?
Any suggestions are welcome
