No sound

Postby gabe on Thu Jul 17, 2008 11:09 pm

Hello:
I just installed this linux distro and at the beginning I was able to listen to my music using amarok, youtube, etc. I turned off my PC and next day when I turned it back on I was not able to hear anything. The weird thing is that I do hear the log in sound and when I turn off the PC it also makes the log out noise. I just don't have sound when it comes to using amarok, movie player, youtube.com, or anything else. What's going on? :(

First check to make sure the proper channel is set and not muted. Right click on the sound applet on the panel and select "Preferences". Try changing the channel and make sure the volume is up and not muted. If that doesn't do anything, open a terminal and post the output of
Code: Select all
aplay -l
It should list any sound cards. Also post the output of
Code: Select all
lspci -v
and
Code: Select all
lsmod

Now I was able to get sound from amarok but I cannot hear anything when I put a DVD in my PC or when I watch a video on youtube.com. I also don't think it has to do with volume control or the channels because I get sound for some things such as log in and log out as well as amarok. Help please.
Thanks.

Type this at your terminal and post your results:

Code: Select all
sudo soundoff

then just for safe measure, type

Code: Select all
sudo soundon
If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You get another chance.
