Welcome to Mint.

Mint by default is a gnome distro, you need to follow the attached link http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php and download Elyssa Main Edition. You will need to burn the downloaded file to a CD as a disc image and then load the CD and install from the live cd. If you need any further info please do not worry about posting further questions.

After a quick google: http://www.linuxine.com/2008/07/howto-i ... buntu.html

Type this in the terminal

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get gnome

or
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get gnome-desktop

Mint is based on Ubuntu, so the same commands should work. I also think if you go to the Package Manager in mintMenu you should be able to find KDE packages and install them from there. I'm still very new to Linux so correct me if this is not the way to do it.

It's
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gnome

and
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop

Alternatively go into synaptic and search for the Gnome meta-package and install that.

Whoops. Forgot the all-important "install" command. It's listed correctly in the link though. My mistake.

still the same thing appears, maybe i should try reinstalling everything again?

Edit: is there a way to reinstall linux mint without a cd? or maybe an online version? because cd's dont work that well on me.

Edit 2: somehow i can install Xfce easily that way but wont allow me to do gnome

Do you have a USB flash drive? If so you can install the ISO image on a USB and boot from that. Download Unetbootin and work from that. That's how I installed Mint.

Why don't you just backup your data save to a DVD RW or send it to an email so you can get it later.

I also suggested saving your data in an email. Where you can retrieve it later.
Also you may think about a memory card or a USB flash drive.
Perhaps these ideas could help

I do not know if Gnome will work just because KDE works.

For future reference.

You may want to consider using gparted or some other partition editing tool prior to installing a Linux distro and create a separate home partition. I know this is a little extra effort on the fron end, but the cool part is...you can switch linux distros till the cow come home and there is a good chance your data will be safe. :)

Another idea...external drives are getting cheaper these days. Or you can get a hard drive on sale and get an enclosure and do a simple plug n play back up.

To be fair...I only follow my own advice on my desktop, but I am pretty careless with my laptop. Hm.
