solved how to connect Realtek wireless modem in linux

Hi day one on linux mint 16.

Was pretty good with windows,but the mysteries of linux is intriguing
how do i get on the internet? i have a wireless USB which works in windows and CD and has linux drivers.
How do i install from CD, no autorun or exe or even setup file to choose.

i really love the idea behind linux so really want to get up and running with it.

How do i install from CD, no autorun or exe or even setup file to choose.

How would we know? You have all the information and we have none Like what is the exact make and model of your wireless USB; what does the README or INSTALL file that is probably included with the Linux drivers on the CD say?

With the USB wifi adapter attached, please open a terminal and run the following command (type it, press Enter). Copy the output here (see terminal's Edit menu).

This will list your USB devices and should list how this USB wifi adapter makes itself known on Linux. That device ID and name you can take from that will help in finding relevant results on the Internet.

if you have the drivers for linux, then it means you have to install it first. may be it will provide a easy mean to connect after installing those drivers (may be a gui). there may be a readme file containing instruction on how to install it or may be i can help you if you let me know the contents (folders, subfolders, fles) of the cd.
what is the model of your usb adapter?
please post the output of the command lsusb with the usb attached to your computer as xenopeek stated.

how do you configure it in windows? does it provide a gui to connect through (in windows)? is this for mobile broadband connection? you have all the information but unfortunately we don't. so it will be convenient if you give detailed information at least how you connect it in windows.

Hey, you are using LM 16 which has Linux Kernel 3.11 but this kernel is not supported by your driver. see reference. this says only Linux kernel versions 2.6.18~3.9 are supported for RTL8188CUS.

though you can try installing the driver. copy the contents of cd (linux drivers) to a folder in home. go inside that folder and right click anywhere and select "open in terminal" then enter these commands (sequentially):

you wiil be prompted for password two times, it will start compiling but at last it may produce some errors. if there are some errors you can post them here, may be someone can help you with that too.

open the folder that contains the install.sh file and open a terminal there. and run those codes in that terminal. simply runing a terminal won't work. or there's another way. open a terminal anywhere you want and run this code:

Sorry but glad i chose dumb user for my intro as it seems to fit me well, oh how i wasted so much years with windows.
i have attached install instructions ran through most things until section 5 or 6 cant find adapter.
could not find that install.sh file.

i am now hard wired however.

download the driver for linux from the reference.
in the referenced website scroll down until you find RTL8188CUS, you will see windows section and unix section. from unix section select a server (HK1, UK1,US2, CN, US3, US1) to download and click on it. the driver will start downloading.

then extract it and open the folder, you will see the install.sh file.

it seems the driver provided by default is outdated. it supports linux kernel 2.6.18 to 2.6.35 as your attachment says, but the latest version supports upto 3.9. download the latest driver for your hardware. instruction to download the latest driver is in my previous post.

did you download the right thing? because the driver i suggested is 2013's version, so there shouldn't be any 2012 in those error codes.
here's the name of the zip file that should be downloaded : RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v4.0.2_9000.20130911.zip
(there are different drivers for different hardware in the referenced site, you have to find the section which says RTL8188CUS, not any other. the update time is 2013/10/29, version no. is 4.0.2_9000, size is 9624k, hope you find it right.)

i don't have the hardware and my kernel is not supported too (3.11).
but yours is 3.8, so it should work. just download the right version.

now open network manager (there's a netwok manager icon in the panel). you should see your modedm there.
