Dual Monitor set up

Postby Satal on Mon Aug 25, 2008 6:50 pm

Hi,

I decided to make the move from Windows to Linux and got recommended Linux Mint by a friend.
Unfortunately one thing my friend didn't have experience with was setting up dual monitors.

As Ive never really used Linux before I have no real idea on how to get the dual monitors to work, as at the moment I'm just getting two monitors with the same screen.

I did manage to get both monitors to work separately at some point, but it looked like one was using gnome and the other was using KDE (which I wouldn't have thought was possible) and also I had to go to the bottom (or the top on the other) of the screen to go to the other screen.

Ive tried Googling this and either I'm not Googling very well or I haven't found anything which seems to give me a newbies guide to setting up dual monitors.

Ive seen a few forum posts where people posted their xorg.conf so people could see their current settings to make suggestions so this is mine;
I don't know whether this is relevant but I'm trying to run both monitors at 1280x1024.

Code: Select all
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction (whether that be explaining what I need to do or pointing me to a good website).

Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Dual Monitor set up

I see
This file was generated by failsafeDexconf

which means that the xorg.conf is an "emergency file"
Could work ok anyway
I think that the modelines and modes are unnecessary and should be deleted
Back it up first
Code: Select all
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf-bak

There is a tool you start from the terminal that could help you (not in the menu because of some issues)
Code: Select all
sudo displayconfig-gtk

Here you should be able to set up the two monitors
Image
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
