Yet more mintupdate questions

Post by depmco »

So, I'm a brand new Mint user, and like it lots. The last unix 'ish OS I used was HPUX maybe ten years ago. I could get around pretty well with that, but times have changed.

I'm running whatever version of mint goes with Ubuntu 7.10 (that's what lsb_release -a tells me) on a 1 GHz Pentium 3 box. I have no idea what version of mintupdate I'm trying to use (how do I find out? I didn't find any clue rooting around in /usr/lib/mint/mintupdate).

Running mintupdate generates a list of level 2 and level 3 items that need updating. Hovering a cursor over the lock icon reports that there are 89 recommended updates. Back in the mintupdate window, all the listed items have check marks in the upgrade column. Clicking the "install updates" box causes the busy clock icon to appear circle for a few moments and the lock icon to, umm, lock. Then after maybe 5 seconds, the busy clock icon disappears and the lock opens. Hovering over the lock icon still shows 89 recommended updates. Refreshing the list doesn't produce any change, nor any error messages. In fact, no messages of any kind appear at any time, and no broken lock icon. Quitting out of mintupdate and starting it up again still reveals 89 recommended updates.

I can find no documentation for mintupdate, so I'm asking for help here.

Thanks in advance. Please be kind if I'm overlooking something obvious.

Responding to my own post, I neglected to mention that I'm using the Fluxbox version.

I can't remember what version of mintUpdate the Fluxbox Edition has, you can find out in Synaptic. You can probably safely update the system using Synaptic.
