Unable to run update manager

Postby macwales on Sat Aug 23, 2014 9:43 am

I have just installed linuxmint 17. The update manager was in the system tray and I activated it. It ran but when apparently finished the update manager icon disappeared. When I put in "mintupdate" in terminal I get

[Errno 5] Input/output error: '/home/xxxx/.config/linuxmint/mintUpdate.conf'

The update manager is in the menu but when I click on it nothing happens. I have uninstalled it and re-installed it but still nothing happens and it does not reappear in the system tray.

Please help

Try deleting the file mintUpdate.conf. I don't have any files in that folder.

Open package manager from the Menu, find the mintupdate in it and install the newest version.

or

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install mintupdate

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I have now done all the things suggested in the avove two posts. Still nothing happens. I think I have done these operations before.

I have now completely removed mintupdate and its acssociated other files using the packet manager and reinstalled it via the software manager and rebooted. Both the deleted and newly installed versions of mintupdate are the latest vesrions.

Any further help will be much appreciated.

Cheers

He may need to do a remove purge on it and completely new install.

How well are other things working? Any other problems come up?

Hi to Both of you. Thanks for the replies

I typed su in terminal then my password then mintupdate not sure if this is the correct way to run it from within terminal. Results were:-

It ran on a greyed out screen, then reported everything up to date and the screen print blacked up. Terminal messages were

(mintUpdate.py:3722): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:3722): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:3722): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:3722): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

Still will not run from menu icon and does not appear in system tray.

Still learning and I find all the commands baffling!!

Thought I had a Firefox still running fault but eventually realised it was due to me double clicking.
Other worries - Google maps latest version does not work in street view I have to revert to classic maps - that work around solution found on this forum so thanks everyone.

Still need to find a backup using my widows home server and can I use skype? So OK so far but I may have to also install windows 7 on my new ssd - I did not want to have to do that!!

macwales,

This time run mintupdate as you, not root. Just open the terminal and enter

Code: Select all
mintupdate

Also does this return anything :?:

Code: Select all
for a in $(apt content mintupdate);do if ! [ -e ${a} ];then echo ${a};fi;done

instead, try
Code: Select all
sudo mintupdate

then give password when prompted.

Let's check a couple things too;

Code: Select all
id

Code: Select all
 aptitude show mint-meta-core -Vvs

Code: Select all
aptitude show mintupdate -Vvs

Code: Select all
aptitude why-not mintupdate -Vvs

post results. This is just to look, won't install anything.

@Spearmint2,

sudo should not be required, please see

Code: Select all
sudo cat /etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate

This could be part of the problem here.

I know it shouldn't be, but wanted to give every chance possible, and maybe he's not running the user ID 1000 which is why I requested feedback for that too.

Hi

Thanks again for looking into this.

mintupdate gives :-

[Errno 5] Input/output error: '/home/charles/.config/linuxmint/mintUpdate.conf'

putting in next bit returns nothing

putting in

sudoo mintupdate gives same error response as above

Putting in 'id' gives:

uid=1000(xxxxx) gid=1000(xxxxx) groups=1000(xxxxx),4(adm),24(cdrom),27(sudo),30(dip),46(plugdev),108(lpadmin),110(sambashare)

putting in

aptitude show mint-meta-core -Vvs

gives:-

putting in

aptitude why-not mintupdate -Vvs

gives:-

Unable to find a reason to remove mintupdate.

putting in

sudo cat /etc/sudoers.d/mintupdate

gives:-

ALL ALL = NOPASSWD:UPDATE

All indecipherable to me.

While browsing on the forum for a possible solution (before starting this post) I got up what seemed to be permission errors when I entered a command in one post I found. I then looked for the mintupdate permissions on my system and they seemed fine. However I was not able to recall where I saw the permissions errors as I lost the post it was in. I hope this makes sense. Could it be a simple permissions error?

I have now got Skype running so now favouring keeping to Linux Mint!
Cheers

I don't know how or why you don't already have this installed.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install mint-meta-core

your ID is 1000 so there shouldn't be any permissions problems.

Are you running MATE or Cinnamon?

copy/paste into terminal, get results and post.

Code: Select all
cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg |grep "menuentry '" |cut -c -45

Hi Again

Did what you suggested put in 'cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg |grep "menuentry '" |cut -c -45' and got

menuentry 'Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 32-bit, 3.1
menuentry 'Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 32-bit, 3.1
menuentry 'Memory test (memtest86+)' {
menuentry 'Memory test (memtest86+, serial co

putting in 'sudo apt-get install mint-meta-core' installed it - now on latest version

macwales,

I'm assuming that it's still not working. I don't understand why it's complaining about the file in your /home so what does this return

Code: Select all
stat /home/$USER/.config/linuxmint/mintUpdate.conf

Hi

I have been able to make it work by using 'su' then my password then 'mintupdate' straight into terminal. It then runs and updates and says its up to date but I am unable to get it to run from the menu or by entering 'mintupdate'.

Petting in what you asked delivers :-

File: ‘/home/xxxx/.config/linuxmint/mintUpdate.conf’
Size: 8192 Blocks: 0 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 19h/25d Inode: 6175833 Links: 1

Access: 2014-08-26 16:36:29.255841991 +0100

Change: 2014-08-21 10:19:20.611969296 +0100

Thanks again for looking at this mystery
