What, if any, impact will Ubuntu 8.10 have on Linux Mint 5?

Yes and no. Mint is not built on Ubuntu, it uses the resources that Ubuntu can provide, but Mint6 will be built off of Mint5, and use the upstream files, (such as gnome, gimp, Oo.o, the new kernel, etc.) to create the basis to update the Mint system. The impact that Ubuntu 8.10 will have on Mint5, is pretty much nothing, it will have an impact on Mint6 however, due to the facts that I posted above.
