Ubuntu 8.10 and Mint 6 should be able to play two sounds at once because of the newer version of Pulse Audio.

I just tried running sound from two applications at the same time with Mint 5 and it worked fine. I have level 1, 2 and 3 updates installed on my system.

Same here. I had one song playing on Amarok and another on Kaffeine. I could hear both as each had individual volume control for themselves, rather than globally.

My question is, why would anyone want to? :)

However, after reading the answers, I guess there is a use for it. :)

I am not too sure on this, but it depends on what applications you are running.

There are still devices which use OSS & ALSA (and Pulse Audio in a way supports OR provides a channel for one of these). If you open an application which uses OSS (or ALSA, not sure which one) and another with Pulse Audio, you cant play them together.

There was a post ubuntu forum about getting PA work on ubuntu 8, which talks abour these: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578.
