Hello . . .
I just loaded LinuxMint 5.0 with KDE 3.5.10.
This distro appears to hold to the Debian theory of releasing upgrades when they are ready with no defined schedule.
My research suggests that LinuxMint 6.0 will include KDE 4.x.x by default.
LinuxMint 5.0 KDE is based on the Kubuntu LTS 8.04.1.
My question is two fold.
Will LinuxMInt support the LTS with 3.5.10 for the same duration as (K)ubuntu?
and more important
After LinuxMint 6.0 is released whenever, if I upgrade 3.5.10 will 4.x.x. be considered an upgrade?
I have some reservations about using KDE 4. My needs for a desktop will be included (in theory) in version KDE 4.3. Until then I will hold off upgrading.

If you've got the storage room on your HD, why not just create ext3's and install Mint 6 along with your current production version (Mint 5)? That way you can "kick the tires" without making the hard committment on an ops that may prove to be problematic with your H/W. If you like what you see with 6.x, you can build your 6.x into the production model when it's released and stabilized.
Just a thought...
