Log In Screen/Box

Post by RoadDawg »

I am new to Linux, and absolutely love it. I messed up my Linux installation on this past Friday night and had to reinstall.

I have done all the updates the Update Manager has shown. Now, when I reboot and am presented with a log in screen/box, no asterisks appear as I type my password. The cursor moves along as it should. I am able to log in just fine.

Is there a setting to fix this, or did I lose what I have left of my mind and this is how Linux works?

OK...problem solved. The issue was my Nvidia graphics card. Linux loaded the "x server-xorg-video-nouveau" graphics driver instead of the recommended Nvidia-311 driver.

In Driver Manager, I switched them and rebooted. Problem solved.

This also explains why at first, when I reboot the system, I saw a Linux Mint logo as the system was booting. After the driver change, I now see the 4 familiar green dots. All is good. :D :D :D
