SiS AC'97 Sound crd worked - now broken

Postby cmbcne on Fri Jan 02, 2009 3:29 pm

Hi all. Relative newbie needs help.

Acer Aspire AS3003WLCi, 2 GB RAM, Fresh install of Elyssa. Sound works. Started sorting out the applications I wanted and those I didn't. After installing and uninstalling abunch if things, I realized the sound had stopped working. I've read other posts on the subject, but they haven't helped.

When I double-click on the Volume Control applet I get: "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found". When I right-click and choose preferences, nothing happens. From other posts I've seen requests for several commands at the terminal. Here's mine:

I have also captured the Synaptics History entries into one file in chronological order. I could post it if it would help, but it's rather long so I'll hold off unless it's requested.

What's my next step, oh great mint gurus?

FOLLOW-UP:
I booted into recovery mode (or whatever it's called). In there I told it continue with regular boot, but it didn't. I got a command line login prompt (which I did). I then typed "startx" and the gui loaded. Sound is now working, but some apps I installed don't (i.e. Azureus, Picasa, Google Earth, etc.). Also the Quit menu item only allows me to Log Out, Lock Screen, Switch User, Suspend, and Hibernate. The options to shut down and restart are missing.

I'm assuming this is because I started X manually.

CLOSE THIS THREAD. I'LL START A NEW ONE
