Locked user account and and no root account! Help!

Postby Valeria_st on Sun Jan 04, 2009 7:16 pm

Hi everyone,

I've made an unforgivably stupid mistake. When installing Mint6 I didn't create root account and only set up a single user. A friend has been using my lap-top today and has managed to enter my user password incorrectly 3 times in a row :? , which resulted in the account being locked. I have tried booting into the recovery mode and dropping down to root shell promt, but when i do that I get prompted for root password. Since I didn't configure root account I can't provide the root password. Leaving the password line empty and hitting enter doesn't help. What do I do now??? I have spent ages configuring the system and would hate to do a full reinstallation.

I would be eternally grateful if you could help me.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'd bookmarked this:

But I don't think I've used it since Daryna or 7.10.

I have tried what you've suggested but it doesn't work. When i'm prompted to enter new unix password I can't type in more that 1 character before I get a new prompt to retype my password. When I give the same character the shell announces that the password was updated successfully and gives me a new command line. But when i type reboot I get: Shutdown: unable to send message: connection refused and I have to do a forced power shutdown... After rebooting my modified single-character password doesn't work.

I'm desperate....
I've spent 2 days configuring remote access server on that machine, I really don't want to reinstall Mint... Is there a way around it???

Please help!

I think it is wise to create root account now.

And this may provide some help in the future, especially partimage.
