Kernel upgrade SOLVED

Post by fred19 »

Mate 17.2 64 bit. From the update manager i have installed 3.16.0-38, rebooted, and the manager says 3.16.0-38 intalled but 3.13.0-24 loaded and the System monitor shows the earlier number.

Is there another step to load the later version?

Thanks.

First go to a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

uname -r
it will return the kernel the machine is currently using.
see if it's -38 or -24.

Are you perhaps booting from the Grub menu of another Linux distro, on a multiboot machine?

Terminal gives

3.13.0-24-generic

I do have 17.1 on a 2nd hard drive which was intalled after the 1st hardrive. 1st harddrive also dual boots XP.

Would that affect the kernal upgrade?

No, just the Grub menu.

Boot into 17.1 and execute this command:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Reason: you have to let the Mint 17.1 Grub know, that there's a newer kernel for the Mint 17.2. :)

No.... You'll have an unbootable computer then, until you re-install Grub like this:
